Children experience the world differently than adults. When they feel overwhelmed, confused, or unheard, they may not yet have the words to explain what they are feeling. Through play, children are able to express emotions, process experiences, and build the skills they need to grow. My role is to meet children where they are and provide a safe, supportive space for that growth to happen.

Hi! My name is Mollee Helmick, and I am a Lafayette native. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Science from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and returned to UL to complete my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. With a background in elementary school teaching, I have a deep passion for working with young children and adolescents and supporting their emotional, social, and developmental needs.

I specialize in working with children as young as 2 years old and adolescents, using developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approaches. My work is rooted in the therapeutic relationship and incorporates Play Therapy, Sandtray Therapy, Art Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). These approaches allow children to express themselves naturally while learning skills for emotional regulation, communication, and coping with life’s challenges.

I take a person-centered, collaborative approach, partnering closely with caregivers to support each child’s unique strengths and needs. My goal is to create a warm, nonjudgmental environment where children feel safe, understood, and empowered to grow.

Outside of the therapy room, I value connection and community. I enjoy spending time with family and friends, being active outdoors, and staying involved in my school, work, and church communities. These moments of connection help shape the care and presence I bring into my work with children and families.

If you are interested in play therapy services for your child, I would be honored to support your family. You may find your child would benefit from therapy when they are experiencing anxiety, depression, frequent stomach aches, developmental regressions, behavioral issues, life transitions, peer struggles, school struggles, and challenges at home. Please feel free to reach out to schedule an appointment or ask any questions.
